action
Will Burton is one of England's most respected criminal lawyers and has never lost a case. He has hardly any moral concerns when defending his clients. Rejecting a case is also out of the question for him, because the main guidelines of his law firm are “every person deserves a defense” and “ cherry-picking is frowned upon ”. On the verge of applying for the office and title of Crown Attorney (QC), he is confronted with a seemingly unequivocal case: Liam Foyle is charged with the rape and murder of a young woman. The burden of proof is overwhelming, but Will can show the court a procedural error. When Foyle leaves the courtroom a free man, Will, convinced of Foyle's guilt and haunted by conscience, refuses to shake his hand. A mistake with grave consequences, because Foyle already has his next victim in his sights.
When Burton's wife is murdered in the presence of their son, Foyle ends up in the dock again. This time the defense is taken over by Burton's worst foe, Maggie Gardner, who wants to fight her way out of Burton's shadow. She causes another acquittal, but during the trial Foyle begins to stalk Gardner too and breaks into her house. As a result of the acquittal, Burton takes the investigation into his own hands and pursues Foyle to Scotland. An attempt to secretly record a confession by Foyle escalates and a series of incidents ends with Foyle's death. Burton is charged with the murder and takes on his own defense. He can convince the court of his innocence. While the court is discussing it, Gardner accuses him of "an almost perfect crime," which she believes can only be uncovered through another targeted examination of the body. She threatens Burton with retrying, but Foyle's body has already been cremated by that point.

The miniseries, and Tennant's performance in particular, received consistently positive reviews. The Guardian described them as "exciting and fast-paced", "extremely creepy, absolutely terrifying" and as "excellent", "nerve-wracking", "icy court thriller that shows David Tennant at his best". The review service provider Rotten Tomatoes awarded the rating “Fresh” with a rating of 85% based on 13 critics. In the separate audience ratings, the three-part series even received a score of 89% with 62 ratings. Metacritic awarded 71 out of 100 possible points based on 12 reviews and thus awarded the seal of "generally positive reviews".
“ The Escape Artist is excellent. After the tragedy, Tennant's character finds his calling, no longer conceited and unbearable, but grieving and tormented. Even his eyes silently drag the viewer into his pain. Tennant is a really good actor. And already we're in the middle of an exciting, fast-paced, creepy - really creepy - thriller. This is not just about what is going on in the courtroom, but more specifically how it is affecting the lives of people outside. "
“Anyone who gets involved with The Escape Artist will be rewarded with a clever hour of television, which does not get really exciting until the second half, but also keeps you happy in its quiet moments with subtle interjections. David Tennant also knows how to use his charm as a morally questionable character and is particularly convincing when it collapses towards the end. "
“The slow pace takes patience, but The Escape Artist benefits from David Tennant's performance as well as from a poignant, engaging and socially conscious act. ["FRESH" seal, 85%] "
“ The Devil's Lawyer is a merciless duel between two unscrupulous characters. The script is strong, the actors are stronger, and the production looks good. In the end, however, a few questions remain. "
