Richard Wilson OBE (born July 9, 1936 in Greenock , Renfrewshire ; real name Ian Colquhoun Wilson ) is a Scottish actor and theater director .

Life

After graduation, Wilson joined the British Army and served in Singapore . He then began to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and played in theaters in Edinburgh , Glasgow and Manchester . In 1994 he was named Officer of the British Empire for his services to the British theater . From 1996 to 1999 he was Rector of the University of Glasgow .

Larger became famous for Wilson through his portrayal of retired security guard Victor Meldrew in the BBC - television series One Foot in the Grave , which was produced in six seasons between 1990 and 2000. In the television series Merlin - The New Adventures , he played the role of the court doctor Gaius.

Wilson is openly gay.
