action

Celebrated as the Busby Babes , Manchester United's team are considered one of the best teams in Europe. However , it is a thorn in the side of the Football League that the club takes part in the European Cup, which is why a postponement of the game due to the away game at Red Star Belgrade is not approved.

In order to get back to England in time to avert a point deduction, Matt Busby decides to travel to and from the game by plane. After a victorious evening in Belgrade, the team flies back and has to make a stopover in Munich. After complications occurred on the first attempt to take off, the plane crashes on the second attempt. Of the Busby Babes, only Bobby Charlton , Harry Gregg and trainer Matt Busby survive .

Meanwhile, Busby's assistant coach Jimmy Murphy , who is also the Welsh national coach, is returning to Manchester from an international match against Israel, where he receives news of the plane crash. In Manchester there is then great mourning for their team in the entire population. After Murphy succeeded in convincing United's board of directors not to stop gaming, he set about building a new team, which was later joined by surviving Gregg and Charlton. The team wins the first game after the tragedy.

The film ends with the 1958 FA Cup final , with Busby returning to the Manchester United coaching chair. In memory of the deceased players, the team wears a new emblem on their jerseys, a phoenix .
