Matthew "Matt" Charles Dunkley (born August 2, 1964 in Croydon , United Kingdom ) is a British orchestrator , arranger and conductor . He has worked on over 190 films, including Black Swan , Inception , Moulin Rogue and Mission: Impossible - Fallout . He has also worked for artists such as Massive Attack , Patti Smith , Badly Drawn Boy , Elliot Smith , Nick Cave and Catatonia . He released two solo albums of his own classical compositions.

Career

At the age of 10, Dunkley began playing the trumpet and later the piano . After studying at the "London College of Music" he became a professional trumpet player and teacher for a few years until he devoted himself to arranging music.

In 1989 he started as assistant to the film orchestrator Christopher Palmer, with whom he worked on projects such as the reconstruction of William Walton's film music or the re-recording of Conrad Salinger's MGM Musical Orchestrations (conducted by Elmer Bernstein ). Christopher Palmer had the greatest influence on Matt's career with his musical and technical brilliance, combined with meticulous attention to detail and his extremely critical ear in the recording studio. After Palmer's untimely death, Dunkley worked in the pop music industry for some time. He arranged pieces of music for string instruments for national artists such as Dido , Melanie C , Catatonia , Badly Drawn Boy , Elliott Smith , Tom Jones , The Pet Shop Boys and Massive Attack , for international greats such as Monica Naranjo, Eros Ramazzotti and Hooverphonic , as well as for the Stars of the classic, e.g. B. Jose Carreras , Luciano Pavarotti , Russel Watson , Vanessa-Mae , Il Divo , Amici, Bond and Maxsim.

Since 1994 Dunkley has worked with Scottish composer Craig Armstrong on numerous film projects, many of which have won awards such as Golden Globe, 2 Baftas and 2 Ivor Novellos. Dunkley also works exclusively for the Indian composer AR Rahman (Bafta, Golden Globe and two-time Oscar winner) as an orchestrator and conductor. Since 2009 he has arranged and directed every film for the composer, Clint Mansell . He also works regularly with the most famous film composers - Hans Zimmer , Nicholas Britell , Joe Kraemer , Randy Edelman , Rolfe Kent , Rachel Portman , Tuomas Kantelinen , Ramin Djawadi and Henry Jackman .

For The Four Musketeers, (D'Artagnan et les Trois Mousquetaires) , with Emmanuelle Béart (direction Pierre Aknine), Dunkley composed the film music (published by Movie Score Media). The next project was the music for the action thriller Storm Force , (Windkracht 10), directed by Hans Herbots, with which the International Film Festival in Ghent was opened.

Dunkley worked on numerous advertising campaigns. The best known is the 2016 Christmas campaign for Sainsbury’s , in which he arranged and produced a song by Oscar winner Bret McKenzie ( Flight of the Conchords ). It was performed by James Corden and directed by award-winning stop-motion animator Sam Fell .

Dunkley is also the author of film music and TV and theater projects. He wrote the music for a large number of British television series such as B. I Saw You, Rescue Me, Safe as Houses, Number 13 and Spirit Warriors .

In 2012 Dunkley was commissioned to write the music for Peter Pan: The Neverending Story , an arena musical based on the story by JM Barrie . For the same production company (Music Hall Belgium), Dunkley has also composed film music for Flanders Fields , a piece of music that premiered at the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Lijssenthoek. Dunkley was also the Musical Director of Cinderella: A Fairly True Story , which premiered in Singapore in 2015.

At Christmas 2017, Dunkley rearranged the complete music for Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Ballet for an innovative and modern dance interpretation (choreography and direction Giuliano Peparini, production design Franco Dragone). The premiere took place in Brussels, Belgium. In September 2018 Matt Dunkley conducted the premiere of the ballet Hamlet (composer Henrik Skram ) in Oslo , danced by the Norwegian National Ballet .

Dunkley has worked with many orchestras in Great Britain such as B. Dunkley has released two of his own classic solo albums under the Village Green label. The album Six Cycles and Cycles 7-16 , released in January 2018, were both recorded with the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg in Berlin.
