If you were King (original title The Kid Who Would Be King ) is a British fantasy adventure film directed by Joe Cornish , which was released on February 15, 2019 in the United Kingdom and on April 18, 2019 in German theaters.

Alex's everyday problems seem secondary when he finds the mythical sword Excalibur. Alex, the most feeble schoolboy in Great Britain, who now holds the most powerful sword in history, has to work with his friends to thwart the plans of a medieval villain named Morgana who wants to destroy the world.
Since Alex grew up without a father, just raised by his mother, there could be a possible connection to King Arthur somewhere in his family line. Hence, Alex accepts the seemingly exclusive fate that has been imposed on him. He is also supported by the magician Merlin, who can switch between three forms with a violent sneeze. Sometimes he appears as his aged alter ego, but mostly he appears as a young man, but can also turn into an owl.

Louis Ashbourne Serkis , the son of Andy Serkis , plays Alex in the film. Patrick Stewart took on the role of the magician Merlin, Angus Imrie plays this in his young appearance.
Filming began in London at the end of September 2017 . Later in the year the film was shot in Tintagel , a town on a rugged stretch of coastline in the county of Cornwall in the extreme south-west of England, including the Old Post Office.
The film music comes from the music collective Electric Wave Bureau by Damon Albarn . The soundtrack, which comprises a total of 33 pieces of music, is to be released by Milan Records.

In Germany the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 6. The film critic Antje Wessels describes If you were king as a very likeable adventure for the whole family , and the film boils down to the fact that only those who stick together can survive difficult times.
Reviews and grossing results
The film has so far received the approval of 90 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and achieved an average rating of 6.9 out of a possible 10 points. The film also won the 21st Annual Golden Tomato Awards in the Best Kids & Family Movies 2019 category .
Variety's Peter Debruge writes that Joe Cornish , the director of Attack the Block , has given the legend of King Arthur a contemporary adaptation full of retro ingredients from the 1980s, making it look like Steven Spielberg- produced adventure films from that era. Cornish never let the film get too dark, Debruge added, and no human figure is in serious danger. In addition, he often makes it far too easy for children to overwhelm their enchanted opponents.
