action

In the fictional village of Gladbury, an angel visits the candle maker every 25 years and leaves a Christmas candle. Who lights this experiences a miracle. The action takes place in 1890. 25 years ago, after a fire in the church, the pastor found a treasure that enabled him to rebuild the church and do good. The whole town believes in the candle except for the new pastor, Rev. David Richmond. The Haddingtons are the village's candle makers and make the candles for the church and the city. It is Advent and the pastor is preaching about various Advent motifs. Every Sunday he lights a candle. He tries to convince the city population to believe in God and not in candle miracles.

One night the Christmas angel appears and marks a special candle. Who lights this candle receives a miracle. Mrs. Haddington wants to keep the candle to herself so that her son can come back to Gladburg. The magic candle is misplaced. Bea, the candle maker, distributes candles to a boy who cannot speak, a woman who wants to find a husband, a blind man and 26 other people who all have a wish. The pastor wants people to pray to God and not look for hope in a candle.

Reverend Richmond is having the church re-equip new and modern lightbulbs at its own expense to show that people don't have to rely on candles. During a church service, he has the candles extinguished and turns on the electric light. The lightbulbs explode and a fire starts. In the panic that follows, a man dies. There are only a few parishioners in the service on Sunday.

The candle miracle is revealed in the Christmas mass. It shows that people have given themselves gifts. The pastor gives the candle to the pregnant Ruth. When her car breaks down, she lights the candle and is rescued. Since the son of the Haddingtons is the father, he returns to Gladbury.
