Broadway is a town in the county of Worcestershire ( County ) in the region West Midlands in England and is located in the far northwestern part of the Cotswolds . The administrative seat is in Worcester .

History

Finds from the Stone Age testify to early settlement. Romans and Anglo-Saxons also left their mark. In the 9th century the place is mentioned as Bradsetena Gamere (= Broad Village). The current name has been in use since the 16th century. At that time the place was an important post station on the Worcester to London route . Here the horses were changed before the road went up Fish Hill , Broadway's local mountain. More than 30 inns and hostels catered for the travelers.

Many of the buildings on the High Street , made of native honey-colored limestone, date from this period, making Broadway one of the typical Cotswold towns. The well-known Lygon Arms Hotel, which was mentioned as early as 1532 and housed King Charles I and Oliver Cromwell , should be highlighted . With the advent of the railway, the place experienced a devaluation of its importance.

In the late 19th century, Broadway became a place for Victorian artists. The writers JMBarrie and Henry James , the composers Ralph Vaughan Williams and Edward Elgar, and the painters Edwin Austin Abbey and John Singer Sargent revived the place. By William Morris and Gordon Russell to design and crafts established.

In 2001 the population was around 2100.
