Broadway Tower
The Broadway Tower is a largely non-functional building ( Folly ) near the English village of Broadway in Worcestershire . The 16 meter high tower stands on the Cotswold Way and on one of the highest points in the Cotswolds (312 m above sea level). When visibility is good, 13 counties can be seen from the tower .
history
The tower, like a castle, was designed and built by James Wyatt for Lady Coventry in 1794 . She wanted to know whether a beacon could be seen on the mountain from her home in Worcester , that is, over a distance of about 35 kilometers, and therefore financed the construction of the tower. The fire was actually clearly visible.
Over the years the tower has had an eventful history. From 1822 to 1862 it was Middle Hill Press, the printing works of the famous book and manuscript collector Sir Thomas Phillips, who kept his collections in a nearby country estate. The tower also served as a retreat for artists such as William Morris .
Today the tower is a tourist attraction.
