Enthiran ( Tamil : எந்திரன் ) is a 2010 Tamil science fiction film directed by Shanmugam Shankar and starring Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai . A spiritual successor with the title 2.0 should appear in 2018.

The film is about an Indian scientist and a robot who turns into evil through an intrigue.

action

After a decade of intensive research, the scientist Vasegaran, with the help of his assistants Siva and Ravi, is developing a sophisticated Android robot to use in the Indian army. He introduces the robot called Chitti at a robot conference in Chennai . Chitti is friendly and helps Sana, a friend of Vasegaran's. He saves her from a group of gangsters. Vaseegaran's mentor, Professor Bohra, is secretly involved in a project to create similar Android robots for a terrorist organization, but has so far been unsuccessful.

Vaseegaran is preparing Chitti for an evaluation by the Institute for Artificial Intelligence Research and Development (AIRD) led by Bohra. During the evaluation, Chitti tries to stab Vaseegaran on Bohra's command, which convinces the evaluation committee that the robot is a hazard and cannot be used for military purposes. Vasegarans tries to prove Bohra's intrigue and wants to show that Chitti is not malicious. So he uses it to save people from a burning building. The robot saves most of them, including a girl named Selvi. Vasegaran asks for a month to be able to modify Chitti's neural scheme in order to make it possible to understand human behavior and emotions. Bohra agrees and it soon shows that Chitti can actually express feelings. In addition, he begins to learn from books on his own and can thus successfully help Sana's sister Latha with the birth of her child. Bohra is impressed and congratulates Vaseegaran on this success. He allows Chitti to take the AIRD exam again, which he now passes. Chitti gradually develops romantic feelings for Sana, who explains to him that they can only be friends. Depressed by Sana's rejection, but still in love with her, Chitti deliberately fails in evaluating the Indian army. Angry, Vaseegaran chops Chitti into pieces, which Siva and Ravi toss on a landfill.

Bohra manages to get Chitti after he has put himself back together on his own, albeit in a somewhat damaged condition. Bohra now installs a red chip in Chitti, which turns him into a ruthless killer. Thereupon he kidnaps Sana, who is about to marry Vaseegaran. Chitti creates innumerable replicas of himself and kills Bohra. Chitti occupies AIRD with his robot army and causes great chaos in the city. Chitti explains to Sana that he has acquired the human ability to reproduce and wants to marry her so that a machine and a human being can give birth to a pre-programmed child. But Sana refuses. Vasegaran tries to stop Chitti, almost killing him. The police are also fighting against Chitti and his robot army, resulting in many casualties and destruction. Vasegaran eventually captures Chitti with the help of a magnetic wall and accesses his internal control panel, instructing all other robots to self-destruct. He removes Chitti's red chip and can calm him down.

In a court hearing, Vasegaran is sentenced to death for the loss and damage caused by the robot army, but Chitti explains that it was Bohra who caused his deviant behavior and the video from a surveillance camera shows Bohra installing the red chip . The court releases Vasegaran while he orders Chitti to be dismantled. Veleegaran has no choice and asks Chitti to do so himself. As they say goodbye, Chitti apologizes to Vaseegaran and Sana before dismantling herself.

The setting of the film will then be postponed until 2030. Chitti is in a museum. A curious student asks the museum guide why the robot was dismantled, whereupon Chitti suddenly replies: “Naan sinthikka arambichen” (I started to think).

background

The film music was composed by AR Rahman . The film is one of the most successful Indian films of all time. After getting stuck in development for nearly a decade, the movie's main shooting began in 2008 and lasted two years. The film marks the debut of Legacy Effects Studio (which was responsible for the prosthetic make-up and animatronics for the film) in Indian cinema. Enthiran was released worldwide on October 1, 2010, along with its dubbed versions: Robot in Hindi and Robo in Telugu . It was produced by Kalanithi Maran and was the most expensive film in India until then.

reception

The film received generally positive reviews after its release. Critics particularly appreciated Rajinikanth's performance, Rathnavelu's cinematography, Cyril's art direction, and the visual effects of V. Srinivas Mohan. Enthiran became the highest-grossing Indian film of 2010 and is the fourth highest-grossing South Indian film of all time. It won two Indian National Film Awards, three Filmfare Awards, seven Vijay Awards, and two Screen Awards.

It says: “'Endhiran' is everything, just not an ordinary film - especially not from the point of view of the Western understanding of large-scale blockbusters. The macabre Indian film project functions as the most expensive work to date that has ever been made in India. "Endhiran would be" not nearly as cheesy and cheesy as in other Bollywood films. The choreographies are nice and varied (especially because of the robot theme used), the overall effect is very pompous. "" Conclusion: If you are in the mood for an absolutely atypical film experience, you have nothing against the so-called Bollywood dance films and would like to be surprised at the end with one of the craziest action scenes of all time (!) - he should keep an eye out for Endhiran. "

At the 58th National Film Awards 2010, Enthiran won for Best Special Effects and Best Production Design.
