The Rising is an Indian film directed by Ketan Mehta in 2005. It is loosely based on the life of Mangal Pandey .

action

Mangal Pandey is a sepoy of the East India Company , which ruled India in the 19th century. In a skirmish with Afghans in 1854 he saves the life of the British Captain William Gordon and a very good friendship develops between them, but it soon becomes strained.

The company rules unfairly and brutally over the entire Indian subcontinent. Indians suffer from the light-skinned British and are mistreated for the slightest cause. When an Indian servant accidentally spills a glass of champagne on a white woman and hands her a cloth, a British officer takes this as an opportunity to beat and whip him. In cases of corruption, only the Indian helpers are held accountable, while the British involved remain unmolested.

In 1857 the East India Company equips its army with new rifles, in which new ammunition is issued: a powder case containing bullets and gunpowder, which must be bitten open. To make the pods watertight, they are greased, which is rumored to be the fat from cows and pigs. For religious reasons, the sepoys , who are either Hindus and Muslims, are not allowed to come into contact with beef (Hindus) or pork (Muslims). Even Captain Gordon is lied to about this by his superiors and passes it on, whereupon Mangal Pandey bites into the powder case. Meanwhile, Mangal began to have doubts and he talked to Gordon about this when their conversation was interrupted by a widow burning and Gordon saves the widow!

After it turns out that beef and pork fat was actually used in the powder pods, Mangal sees himself as an outcast, but is still accepted by his comrades. When British officers order the use of the pods again, the first major disobedience occurs in Behrampur . The high command decides to disband the rebellious regiments with the help of a purely British regiment. Meanwhile, the rebellious Sepoy team up with other Indians who want to end the rule of the East India Company. The plan is betrayed to the British, the British regiment arrives faster and surprises Mangal Pandey and his soldiers. There is a sword fight between Mangal and William, which Mangal wins, but he cannot bring himself to kill his friend. Opposing a mighty superior force, Pandey sends the other soldiers away and fires at the British, killing two officers and wounding four others. After a failed suicide attempt, he is brought to justice and sentenced to death by hanging. The night before, he married the prostitute Heera in prison, whom he had once saved from a brutal British officer. When Pandey is hanged the next day, the Indian uprising against the East India Company breaks out seconds after his death.

Reviews

“Convincing epic based on actual events about friendship, betrayal and colonial arrogance, which addresses the first Indian war of liberation. Bollywood elements are kept within limits and are subordinate to the story. "
