Ippolito Sanfratello (born March 11, 1973 in Piacenza ) is an Italian speed skater and Olympic champion .

Career

Ippolito Sanfratello is an all-rounder who can run all distances from 500 to 10,000 meters. But he has specialized more in long and medium-haul routes. The greatest success of his career was participating in the 2006 Olympic Games in his Italian homeland in Turin . In the team run he won the gold medal with Stefano Donagrandi , Enrico Fabris and Matteo Anesi . He also competed over 1500 meters (18th), 5000 meters (14th) and 10,000 meters (12th). At the individual distance world championships in 2005 in Inzell he won after a 15th place over 5000 meters with the Italian team silver in the team run. At the 2006 World Allrounder Championships in Calgary , Sanfratello was seventh. The same rank he took in the same discipline in the same year in Hamar at the European Championships.

Sanfratello made his debut in the World Cup in February 2004 in Klobenstein, Italy (19th over 1000 meters in group B). His best and so far only result among the top ten, he achieved with a seventh place over 5000 meters at the Pre-Olympic World Cup in November 2005 in Turin . Once in 2004 he was runner-up in Italy's four-way battle behind superstar Enrico Fabris.
