Matthias Knoll (born March 9, 1963 in Berlin ) is a German translator , poet and reciter .

Life and activities

Matthias Knoll was born in West Berlin in 1963 . Inspired by an encounter with Frederike Frei , she wrote her first poems in 1978. From 1981 to 1987 he studied in Berlin at the School of Art and Art Eurythmy with Helene and Claudia Reisinger Eurythmie and put a first book of poetry before the occasion of his diploma statements. A brief teaching activity as a eurythmy teacher was followed by an engagement as an actor and assistant director at the Cologne Theater der Keller and at the “Theater unterm Dach” in Balingen .

After returning to Berlin in 1989, he began to regularly publish his own volumes of poetry; A new volume of poetry was published every year until 1992 and the bilingual anthology Miracles and Wounds in 1993 . Poetry from Latvia . After that, Knoll's main activity shifted to translating Latvian literature for renowned German and Swiss publishers. In 1996 he was accepted into the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works (VdÜ) and in 2000 - in his function as translator - into the Latvian Writers 'Association ( Latvijas Rakstnieku savienība ) and the Latvian Dramatists' Guild ( Latvijas Dramaturgu ģilde ). In the same year, the website www.literatur.lv was set up as a “portal for texts and authors from Latvia”.

Since 2001 Knoll has been organizing the “LiteraTour through Riga”, an interactive city tour performance in an urban setting, in which poems, as well as fragments of drama and prose by Latvian authors in German translation, are presented in German translation and then recited. In this way, the literary or intellectual-creative dimension of the Latvian cultural area is opened up to cultural tour groups and delegations etc. as well as individual travelers.

Around the time the Republic of Latvia joined the EU in 2004, Knoll u. a. the speeches given in German-speaking countries by the Latvian President Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga as well as several essays and speeches in German by the writer Māra Zālīte .

In September 2009 he published the volume of poetry 5 9 7. mīlas apmātības vārsmas in Latvia , which contains a poem that - without reference to its author and thus in violation of copyright - was printed in a Latvian novel.

Since 2009 Knoll has been increasingly acting as an actor in Latvia. In episode roles he worked in the feature films Dancis pa trim ("Tanz zu dritt", 2011, director: Arvīds Krievs ), Tēvs Nakts (English distribution title: The Mover , 2018, director: Dāvis Sīmanis , about Žanis Lipke ) and in the role of Dr. Kremer in the "historical crime drama" 1906 (2019, director: Gatis Šmits ) with. For the Riga film and television production company Hansa Media he developed the episode series Herder Returns to Riga , in which he embodies both Johann Gottfried Herder and his interview partner. At the Latvian National Theater Knoll was seen in the 2019/2020 season in the dramatization of Aivars Freimanis ' novel Katls (“The Kettle”, director: Ināra Slucka ).

  • Nomination for the title of Gada rīdzinieks 2013 (Rigans of the year 2013) and certificate of recognition from the Riga City Council ( Rīgas Dome ) for the popularization of Latvian literature and the Riga cultural ambience
