Pauls Bankovskis (born March 10, 1973 in Cēsis , Latvian SSR , now the Republic of Latvia , † July 12, 2020 in Riga ) was a Latvian writer , journalist and publicist .

Life

Pauls Bankovskis was born in 1973 in Cēsis. Until the age of four he lived in Līgatne and later in Sigulda , where he attended middle school up to the 9th grade; He continued his education in the department for artistic glass processing at the Riga Middle School for Applied Arts ( Rīgas Lietišķās mākslas vidusskola / RLMV). He then studied from 1992 to 1996 at the Institute of Philosophy of the Faculty of History and Philosophy of the Latvian University .

At the end of 1992 his first publication - the translation of a conversation with Umberto Eco - appeared in the weekly magazine Literatūra un Māksla (Literature and Art), in which his debut as a writer was published in March 1993. He later worked for the daily newspaper Labrīt and the literary journal Karogs (rubric pasaulē / in the world). He was one of the initiators and organizers of the Riga reading festival "Prozas lasījumi" (prose readings), which has been held every December since 1995 (and has been international since 2002). In 1996 he joined the editorial staff of the daily Diena , where he was responsible for the Grāmatas (books) section in the Friday supplement Izklaide (entertainment). Since 1998 he was a member of the Latvian Writers' Union ( Latvijas rakstnieku savienība ) and from 2001 to 2007 he was the editor in charge of the online version of the newspaper (diena.lv). He also wrote for the magazine ir and, with great continuity, for the independent online cultural journal satori.lv.

Since 2006 Pauls Bankovskis has been director of the academic literature publishing house Liepnieks un Rītups and a permanent member of the editorial board of the monthly Rīgas Laiks , for which he a. a. the rubric rl serfo (RL surfs) designed (together with the philosopher Ilmārs Šlāpins ). From 2011 to 2016 he was a senior copywriter at the advertising agency TBWA \ Latvija. In 2016 he curated the interactive exhibition Grāmata Latvijā (The Book in Latvia) in the Latvian National Library with the historian Gustavs Strenga .

Working in the German-speaking area

In November 2003, Pauls Bankovskis took part alongside Olga Tokarczuk a . a. took part in the event "Landscapes of Change (II) - The Authors' Long Night" at the Berlin Literary Colloquium . Shortly after the Republic of Latvia joined the EU on May 1, 2004, his column Lenin's round leather appeared in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung .

From March 1 to August 31, 2006 he was artist in residence at Akademie Schloss Solitude , where parts of the Skola collection of stories were created; a selection of short stories from it was published in 2008 in German translation with the title Schule. Lower level . In October 2006 he worked alongside Pēteris Vasks u. a. guest at Atelierhaus Vahle in Darmstadt, in 2010 he read his contribution to the lexicon of bulky words in the Literaturhaus Stuttgart .

Private

Pauls Bankovskis had three siblings around twenty years older. He had a daughter (* 1999) with the photographer Anda Bankovska (Anda Magone since 2016). From 2003 until her sudden death, his partner was the writer Andra Neiburga (1957–2019); their daughter Katrīna and son Aleksandrs are dedicated to his last completed work, the 600-page fantastic novel Pasaules vēsture (History of the World). At first nothing was known about the details of the death of Bankovskis.
