The Latvian National Theater ( Latvijas Nacionālais teātris ) is a theater in the Latvian capital Riga .

It was originally founded in 1902 as the 2nd Riga City Theater and turned into the National Theater on November 30, 1919, one year after Latvia gained independence. Latvia's independence was declared on November 18, 1918 in the building of the National Theater.

Until 1917 it was also called the Russian Theater, in contrast to the other city theater in today's opera, the so-called German Theater. On the two stages (large hall with 850 seats) mainly plays by Latvian and Northern European authors are performed.
