Josephine Siebe

Josephine Siebe (born November 10, 1870 in Leipzig ; † July 26, 1941 there ) was a German editor and children's book author. Between 1900 and 1940 she wrote almost 70 books for children and adolescent girls, as well as a large number of articles in annual and edited volumes.

life and work

For several years Josephine Siebe worked as editor of the women's supplement of the Leipziger Tageblatt and the women's section of Reclam's Universum . It was initially successful with collections of children's stories that were set in the village or in the small town. However, she became best known for her series of seven Punch and Judy books, which were written between 1921 and 1930 and were reissued over and over again until the early 1990s. A number of her books have recently appeared again, mostly as eBooks. The Kasperle series reports on the adventures of a lively Kasperle. Unlike Pinocchio, a wooden doll come to life, Josephine Siebe's puppet comes from a puppet island in a distant world, to which it returns at the end of the fifth volume. The motif of the toy that comes to life at times also gives Siebe's stories about dolls and bears a special charm and helped them to be successful.

Some of Josephine Siebe's books have also been translated into other languages; editions in Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, French, American, Polish, Swedish and Finnish are known. Her books were adorned by some of the best-known youth book illustrators of the time: Ernst Kutzer , Fritz Bergen, Willy Planck, Joseph Mauder, Carl Schmauk, Prof. Hermann Stockmann , Prof. Wilhelm Claudius, Prof. Ernst Liebermann, Fritz Baumgarten and others.
