Hermann Stockmann

Hermann Stockmann (born April 28, 1867 in Passau , † December 25, 1938 in Dachau ) was a German painter, draftsman and illustrator. He lived in Dachau for 40 years. There he was the poet among the painters of the moss, who often found the most beautiful expression of the greatness of this landscape in color and form in almost surprising simplicity (quoted from Ida-Seele-Archiv ; files: Hermann Stockmann No. 1/2 / 3).

At the age of 14 he came to his uncle in Munich to attend secondary school there. After an apprenticeship as a decoration painter, Hermann Stockmann, son of a porcelain modeler, studied at the Munich Art Academy a. a. with Gabriel Hackl , Johann Caspar Heterich and Wilhelm von Dietz . It was the latter who recognized and encouraged his pupil's ability to draw landscapes, architecture and figures from memory, i.e. without a model. In the capital of the Kingdom of Bavaria, he was a valued member of the artist society Allotria . He created many designs for the famous Munich pageants.

In 1898, the artist, who was now valued primarily as an illustrator, moved to Dachau . At the time, the city on the Amper was highly regarded as a place to study and work for visual artists from the art metropolis of Munich and around the world. Hermann Stockmann, who was appointed professor at the Munich Art Academy by Prince Regent Luitpold in 1910, worked there until his death, where he founded a museum association and opened a picture gallery in 1908. In addition, he was responsible for the design of several larger pageants in Dachau and Munich, for example the pageant for the city elevation of Dachau in August 1934. Hermann Stockmann wrote:

The pageants usually held at city anniversaries were mostly so-called historical marches. You won't see anything of that in Dachau, but a train whose style comes as close as possible to the old place. Dachau has a vast hinterland with a rural population, and only those who know the high-altitude, genuine Bavarian town who know its hinterland. The character of the old market was rural, and the young city will not need to be ashamed of this peculiarity either; rather, it should always emphasize them in contrast to the city of Munich. This should also show the development of the pageant (quoted from Ida-Seele-Archiv ; files: Hermann Stockmann No. 1/2/3).

The artist drew many motifs for calendar pictures and postcards. He painted company signs and product labels, designed house facades, decorated inns, designed posters for large folk festivals in Bavaria, made several designs for glass pictures in churches (e.g. parish church St. Benedikt in Ebertshausen ), which were executed by Syrius Eberle and others. a. m.

He also illustrated a considerable number of children's books. Examples are some of his illustrated works, the village and small town stories by the children's writer Josephine Siebe : Oberheudorfer Buben- und Mädchengeschichten (1908), New Children's Stories from Oberheudorf (1912), Holiday Guests in the Silver Star (1920) Three from Oberheudorf (1932), and Fritz Immerfroh (1938). He also wrote poetry himself and illustrated his own texts, such as Kleinstadtzauber , which was published in 1925 by the Braun und Schneider publishing house in Munich.

Hermann Stockmann had illustrated several children's books by Josephine Siebe

Hermann Stockmann worked for the then popular and richly illustrated weekly Fliegende Blätter for over 30 years , for which he created an unmanageable number of illustrations. From 1896 onwards he also made a few drawings for the magazine Jugend . At the beginning of the 30s he illustrated a number of articles in the bi-monthly publication "Jugendlust" of the Bavarian Teachers' Association.

His painter colleague Carl Thiemann summarized his lively artistic work :

The artist was particularly happy to cultivate the image of the small towns in Main Franconia and the magic of the Biedermeier world ... He was one of the hardest-working artists who lived in Dachau at the time, and was not only successful as a draftsman and illustrator, but also as a painter. As such, he preferred motifs from the Dachau moss, foehn moods with the heaps of clouds he masterfully portrayed, pictures of our then still untouched Amper landscape with its charming oxbow lakes, views from the Dachau hill country to the plain, beer cellars with Biedermeier accessories - an abundant list of his creations , from a quiet, cozy, beautiful world (Thiemann o. J., p. 17).

The artist was also a local historian. With great dedication he collected antiques and traditional costumes for the Bavarian Association for Folk Art and Folklore . With the same passion he tried to revive forgotten customs and cultural assets and to bring them to the people. For example, he has updated the old Bavarian customs such as the Dreikönigssingen, the paradeis, the nativity play. For the nativity scene, he designed the costumes and stage decorations and also rewrote the play scenes.

Hermann Stockmann was also a co-founder of the Dachau artist group . As such, he was instrumental in the artist group's first exhibition on June 11, 1919 in Dachau Castle. After the dissolution of the Dachau artist group , he became involved in the Dachau Artists' Association , which was founded in 1927 and whose 1st chairman Hermann Stockmann was until 1929, then an honorary member.

In 1927, on his 60th birthday, he was made an honorary citizen of the Dachau market.

Hermann Stockmann had been married to the pharmacist's daughter Caroline Wocher since 1898. Daughter Emilie emerged from the marriage.

Today one street each in Dachau, Haimhausen and Munich- Solln reminds of him. A considerable number of his works of art can be viewed in the Dachau Picture Gallery. In September 1988, she dedicated a special exhibition to him in Dachau Castle with the title: Hermann Stockmann - The artist's home care work .

His stately house, the so-called "Spatzenschlössl", built in 1899 in the neo-baroque style, is still in a well-preserved condition and is rented to artists by the city of Dachau. Studio visits are possible after prior agreement with the residents.
