International Catholic Migration Commission

The International Catholic Migration Commission ( en . : International Catholic Migration Commission , commonly used abbreviation: ICMC ; fr . : Commission Internationale Catholique pour les Migrations , abbreviation: CICM) is an international organization within the Roman Catholic Church . It was founded in 1951 and recognized by the Holy See as an international Catholic association of believers . It has the status of a non-governmental organization. In this function she has an advisory seat on the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations , UNESCO , the International Labor Organization , the European Council and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees . Within the Curia , she works closely and interdisciplinary with the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care for Migrants and People on the Move and the Pontifical Council for the Laity .

history

The founding initiative goes back to the Italian priest Luigi Ligutti (1895–1983) and the German politician Johannes Schauff (1902–1990). They beat the then Pope Pius XII. (1939-1958) proposed to found an organization that should take care of the interests of migrants . With the support of the later Pope Paul VI. (1963–1978) the “Migration Commission” was founded in 1951. It gained increasing importance under the effects of the refugee movements after the Second World War .

Self-image

The ICMC puts its work in the service of refugees, the primary endeavor is to save people. But they would also like to contribute to family reunification and encourage a new beginning in life together. All efforts are based on the acceptance and application of Christian principles. The range of tasks includes: assistance in emergency situations, assistance and protection for women and children in human trafficking , legal assistance, campaigns, professional training, care for the elderly and social service for the disabled. Together, the Commission intends to contribute to the education for solidarity and tolerance afford.

Organization and expansion

The ICMC has 172 associations and subsidiary associations that present themselves in 65 countries. The seat is in Geneva ; Liaison offices are maintained in New York City and Brussels , and there are operational contact points in 30 countries. It employs between 180 and 200 full-time employees. From Germany, the Migration Commission of the German Bishops' Conference is a member. The governing council of the commission is composed of representatives of the national episcopal conferences that have acceded to the commission.
