Silvano Maria Tomasi CS (born October 12, 1940 in Casoni , Veneto ) is an Italian clergyman, archbishop emeritus and diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

Silvano Tomasi joined the Congregation of the Scalabrini Missionaries in and received on May 31 in 1965 by the New York Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Maria Pernicone the sacrament of Holy Orders .

On June 27, 1989, he was appointed secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and People on the Move .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Archbishop of Cercina and Apostolic Nuncio in Ethiopia and Eritrea on June 27, 1996 . On August 17, 1996 he received the episcopal ordination from Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano ; Co- consecrators were the President of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and People on the Move, Archbishop Giovanni Cheli , and the Bishop of Treviso , Paolo Magnani .

On April 24, 1999 he was appointed titular archbishop of the titular bishopric of Acelum , which goes back to his home region . On December 23, 2000, Pope John Paul II appointed him in addition to the Apostolic Nuncio in Djibouti .

On June 10, 2003, the Pope appointed him Permanent Observer of the Holy See at the United Nations Office in Geneva and the World Trade Organization . This activity ended with the appointment of his successor Ivan Jurkovič on February 13, 2016.

On April 9, 2016, he was appointed a member of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace . With effect from January 1, 2017, Pope Francis appointed him delegate secretary of the newly established dicastery for the holistic development of man , which also included the 'Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace'.
