Diarmuid Martin
Diarmuid Martin (born April 8, 1945 in Dublin , Ireland ) is Archbishop of Dublin and Primate of Ireland.
Life
After studying philosophy and theology in Dublin, Martin was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Dublin on May 25, 1969 . He then continued his studies in moral theology at the Angelicum in Rome, whereupon he joined the Holy See in 1976 as an official at the Pontifical Council for the Family .
In 1986 Martin was appointed vice-president and in 1994 general secretary of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace , which was followed on December 5, 1998 by the appointment of Titular Bishop of Glenndálocha . Pope John Paul II personally donated him episcopal ordination on January 6, 1999 in St. Peter's Basilica . Promoted to titular archbishop in March 2003, he also became permanent representative of the Holy See to the United Nations in Geneva and to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Appointed coadjutor of the Archbishop of Dublin on May 3, 2003 , he was introduced to the office on August 30, 2003 and finally Archbishop of Dublin on April 26, 2004, and thus Primate of Ireland. On July 13, 2016, he became a member of the communications secretariat (today: Dicastery for Communications ) of the Roman Curia .
Viewpoints
In February 2014, he opposed same-sex marriage , which was voted on in a 2015 referendum in Ireland . In this context, however, he emphasized that people who did not treat homosexuals with love insulted God and should therefore ultimately be called "hostile to God".
Martin is of the opinion that Catholics do not have to obey the laws of the state if they contradict the (Catholic) faith.
