John Fleming (born February 16, 1948 in Ardpatrick , County Limerick , Ireland ) is the Roman Catholic Bishop of Killala .

Life

Fleming was the oldest of five children and grew up on their parents' farm. He attended Ardpatrick National School , St Munchin's College in Limerick and St Patrick's College in Maynooth . As a candidate for the priesthood , he attended the Irish Pontifical College in Rome . He was ordained a priest on June 18, 1972 and then became a curate in the St. Michael’s Parish in Limerick. A year later he was appointed Assistant Diocesan Secretary . In September 1974 he went to Rome and London to study conjugal canon law . After his return to the Diocese of Limerick he was appointed Diocesan Secretary and took up his work as a notary at the local Limerick Marriage Tribunal . In 1975 he became chaplain with the Christian Brothers in Limerick and a year later chaplain with the Presentation Sisters in Limerick.

In September 1979 he continued his studies of canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University , where he received a licentiate in canon law two years later . On his return to the Diocese of Limerick, he was reappointed Diocesan Secretary . And soon afterwards he was appointed financial administrator of the diocese.

In September 1985, Fleming went back to Rome to work on his doctorate in canon law. He then became Director of Formation at the Irish Pontifical College. In August 1987 he was appointed Vice Rector of the college. In September 1993 he was finally appointed its rector. He was also made an honorary prelate by Pope John Paul II .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Killala on February 19, 2002. He received his episcopal ordination on April 7th of the same year in St Muredach's Cathedral by the Archbishop of Tuam , Michael Neary ; Co- consecrators were Seán Baptist Brady , Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of the Roman Catholic Church of All Ireland , and Thomas Anthony Finnegan , Bishop Emeritus of Killala.
