Until September 2014 he was chairman of the Irish Bishops' Conference and was known to the general public for the systematic cover-up of numerous sexual assaults.

Early years

Seán Brady was born in Laragh Village, County Cavan , Kilmore Diocese . After school he studied in Rome Catholic theology , was from the Pontifical Irish College and received on 22 February in 1964 by Luigi Cardinal Traglia the priesthood . He was promoted to Dr. iur. can. ( Canon Law ) at the Lateran University doctorate .

His first professional position was a professorship at St. Patrick's College in the city of Cavan. In 1980 he became vice rector of the Irish College in Rome, in 1993 parish pastor in Castletara, County Cavan.

In December 1994, Seán Brady was appointed coadjutor to the Archbishop of Armagh. He was ordained bishop on February 19, 1995 by Archbishop Cahal Cardinal Daly , co- consecrators were Emanuele Gerada , nuncio in Ireland, and Gerard Clifford , auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Armagh. After Cardinal Daly's retirement, Brady became Archbishop himself on October 1, 1996.

His motto is Jesus Christum cognoscere (“Knowing Jesus Christ”) and is borrowed from the Gospel of John ( John 17.3  EU ).

On November 24, 2007, Benedict XVI took him . as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Quirico e Giulitta in the cardinals college .

Three days after his appointment as Cardinal, Brady declared at a mass in Cork to survivors of sexual abuse by Catholic priests in Ireland that the most important task for the Church was "to change its culture and to listen to humble others."

It was also Cardinal Brady who, in February 2008, persuaded the Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Dublin, Desmond Cardinal Connell, to withdraw a lawsuit against his successor, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin . He agreed to hand over several thousand documents to a commission charged with investigating how clerics dealt with child abuse between 1975 and 2004. Connell's lawsuit caused a stir among Irish Catholics as well as victims of abuse.

On the occasion of the publication of the investigation report of a special commission that had been evaluating the files for nine years, Cardinal Brady admitted that he was deeply concerned. "I am sincerely sorry and deeply ashamed that children suffered so horribly in these facilities."

In 2010, Brady was confronted with calls for his resignation after he admitted that he was present in 1975 when two young victims had to take an oath to keep quiet about a church investigation into the abuse allegations against the priest Brendan Smyth had been treated . Brady commented that as bishop's secretary, he had been charged with convicting Smyth as part of the internal church investigation, not informing the police.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed Eamon Martin as coadjutor for the Archdiocese of Armagh on January 18, 2013 . On September 8, 2014, Pope Francis accepted Brady's resignation.
