Foundation and area of responsibility

Giovanni Battista Scalabrini (1839–1905)

The Congregation was founded in Piacenza on November 28, 1887 by Blessed Giovanni Battista Scalabrini . His task was the pastoral and charitable care of the Italians who had emigrated to America . From 1940 this concern was also directed towards the Italians who had emigrated within Europe . The Scalabrini missionaries include religious priests and brothers.

In 1969 the Holy See gave the Congregation permission to work on behalf of migrants worldwide . Since then, the brothers and priests are not only of Italian origin. New confreres come from Brazil , the Philippines , Colombia , Mexico , Haiti and Germany. The religious working in Germany work closely with the Sisters of the Divine Will , who mainly take care of the Italian migrants in Germany . Since 1998 the Scalabrini missionaries have also been taking care of refugees . In this area, evangelization or the strengthening of faith has priority. Reception centers for migrants and refugees are organized in poorer countries. The main tasks are also to sensitize the local Church and the citizens to the problems of migration and vocational questions of priests and lay people.

In 2000, the Scalabrini International Migration Institute (SIMI) was founded. The institute, based in Rome, is associated with the Pontifical Urban University and is particularly committed to the issue of migration .

At the General Chapter of the Scalabrini Missionaries in 2007, a non-Italian, Sérgio Olivo Geremia from Brazil , was elected as the new Superior General for the first time . Leonir Chiarello has been Superior General since 2018 .
