Igram van Achelen
Igram van Achelen (* around 1528 in Herzogenbusch ; † October 18, 1604 in Mechelen ) was a Frisian politician.
Life
Achelen studied law at the universities of Deventer, Leiden and Löwen. In 1550 he was appointed a member of the Frisian Provincial Council by Emperor Charles V , and in 1570 President of the Frisian Council of State. In the 1570s he made a name for himself in building numerous dykes in Friesland.
During the establishment of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands , Achelen was accused of taking sides with Don Juan de Austria and arrested in 1578. In 1586 he was released and rehabilitated with an appointment as a knight. He was appointed a member of the Secret Council. In 1598 he became President of the Grand Council of Mechelen.
