Klaas Aldert Hendrik Hidding (born April 23, 1902 in Rotterdam , † July 1, 1986 in Oegstgeest ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian and church historian.

Life

Klaas Aldert Hendrik Hidding was the son of tax officer Hendrik Hidding (born July 26, 1869 in Oude Pekela; † March 24, 1935 in Groningen) and his wife Anna Foulina Franken (born May 18, 1878 in Oude Pekela; † December 7, 1949 in Haarlem). Since his father was transferred to his service in 1909, he attended school in Zwolle and in 1916 the grammar school in Groningen . In 1921 he began to study oriental language and literature at the University of Leiden , completed his theological examination in Groningen in December 1923 and became a candidate for Indonesian literature in Leiden in 1925. In 1928 he passed his doctoral examination and received his doctorate in November 1929 in Leiden Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje (1857-1936) with the thesis Nji Pohatji Sangjang Sri to the doctorate of Indonesian literature. In 1930 Hidding became an official of the Balai Pustaka Literature Dissemination Bureau in Jakarta , of which he became director in 1936.

In Indonesia he also lived through the Second World War and was interned by the Japanese in 1942. He continued his role as director after the Second World War. On April 24, 1948, Hidding was appointed to the professorship of church history and religious phenomenology at the University of Leiden, which he took up on June 1, 1948 and on October 1 of the same year the introductory speech De Spiegel der Waarheid (German: The mirror of truth ) held. In the academy year 1966/67 he was elected rector of the Alma Mater , for which he gave the rector's speech Structurele Godsdienstwetenschap (German: structural religious studies ) on February 8, 1967 . On April 7, 1972 he retired from his professorship and held his farewell lecture on May 26 of the same year on the topic of De toekomst van het geloof (German: The future of faith ).

He spent the last years of his life in the Leiden suburb of Oegstgeest, where he finally died.

Hidding married on July 25, 1928 in The Hague Elisabeth Suzanna Roggeveen (born April 30, 1904 in Leiden; † September 29, 1988) The daughter of Dirk Roggeveen (born June 6, 1872 in Anna Paulowna; † March 4, 1955 in Amsterdam) and Elisabeth Susanna Bausch (born September 16, 1878 in The Hague; † January 6, 1944 in Assen).
