Bartholomäus Anhorn the Elder (born July 1, 1566 in Fläsch ; † January 29, 1642 in Gais AR ) was a Swiss Protestant Reformed pastor , historian and chronicler in Graubünden and Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Bartholomäus Anhorn the Elder Ä. was born on July 1, 1566 as the son of Ulrich Anhorn and Catharina Adank in Fläsch in the Bündner Herrschaft in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. His father was a farmer, jury member and sackmaster. He attended the Latin school in Chur , and from 1582 he studied in Zurich at the Schola Tigurina , the forerunner of the University of Zurich . In 1586 he was ordained and accepted into the Bündner Synod , which allowed him to work as a pastor in the Three Leagues . In 1587 he became a pastor in his home parish of Fläsch. He stayed at this pastor's post - with a brief interruption in 1605 - until 1612. From 1596 onwards, he also looked after Maienfeld as a preacher , where he remained active until 1621.

In 1612 he preached in the Reformed church in Zizers , two years later in Trimmis . This made him unpopular with the Catholics and in 1621 at the beginning of the Bündner turmoil he had to flee from the invading Austrians and went to the St. Gallen Oberland. In 1622 he briefly returned to Maienfeld. In 1623 Anhorn became pastor in the Reformed municipality of Speicher in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden , in 1642 he took over the municipality of Gais , where he stayed until his death on January 29, 1642.

Bartholomäus Anhorn the Elder spent the last twenty years of his life outside of his homeland Graubünden, but is still considered an important observer and chronicler of the Graubünden turmoil. His works are considered to be one of the most important sources for the history of Graubünden in the early 17th century. In 1607, in his first historical work, Bündner Aufruhr denounced criminal courts, purchase of offices, pensions and the overgrowth of the Bündner judiciary as the main causes of state collapse. In his main work "Graw-Pünter-Krieg" (1603–1629) he presented detailed descriptions of the war events of the Bündner turmoil. After emigrating to Appenzellerland, he wrote the Appenzeller Chronick in 1625, the first broader account of the history of his adopted home.

His son was the pastor Daniel Anhorn (1594-1635), who founded the name Anhorn von Hartwiss; his son was Bartholomäus Anhorn von Hartwiss . Like his grandfather, he was a Protestant-Reformed pastor and historian in the cantons of Graubünden, St. Gallen, Thurgau, Zurich and also in the German Palatinate.
