The battle of La Higueruela (German about "Battle of the Fig Tree") took place on July 1, 1431 in the Vega des Genil near Granada .

Muhammad IX , Emir of Granada from the Nasrid dynasty , had been able to eliminate his greatest rival to the throne with the murder of his predecessor Muhammad VIII , but also made his loyal vizier Ridwân Banûegas a bitter enemy. In May 1431, Ridwân Banûegas visited the Castilian King John II at his court in Cordoba and offered him his support to install a loyal ruler in Granada in Yusuf ibn al-Mawl .

In July 1431, the Castilian army, under the leadership of the Condestable Álvaro de Luna, met the Granada. The battle was a great military success for the Kingdom of Castile . The Emir Yusuf IV, who was subsequently installed as a puppet of Castile, found no support in the emirate of Granada and was only able to stay in power for a few months. The episode is indicative of the inner state of the Nasrid Empire, which suffered from internal power struggles in the 15th century and was thus ultimately doomed.

The battle was captured in numerous frescoes by Fabrizio Castello , Orazio Cambiaso and Lazzaro Tavarone in the Gallery of Battles in the Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial .

Remarks

  1. The name comes from the fact that, according to tradition, after the devastating battle, a single small fig tree should have remained on the battlefield, cf. http://www.artehistoria.com/v2/contextos/8766.htm . There is no reference to the town of Higueruela in Castile-La Mancha, nor to the municipality of Higuera de Calatrava in the province of Jaén.
