Ulrich Haarmann
Ulrich Haarmann (born September 22, 1942 in Stuttgart ; † June 4, 1999 ) was a German scholar of Islam and historian.
Life
He studied under Oluf Krückmann at the University of Freiburg and under Rudolf Mach at Princeton University with a bachelor's degree in Oriental Studies (Arabic studies) in 1965 and received his doctorate in 1969 under Hans Robert Roemer in Freiburg on the historiography of the Mamluks ( source studies on the early Mamluk period , 1970 ). Initially his focus was on philological interests (Classical Arabic and its changes in its use in Islamic religion and law), he now turned to the history of the Islamic Middle East in the late Middle Ages and the early modern period. After completing his doctorate, he spent two years at the German Archaeological Institute in Cairo , where he edited the chronicle of Ibn Ad-Dawadari on the early Mamluks. In 1972 he completed his habilitation in Freiburg and became a professor there. From 1978 to 1980 he was head of the Orient Institute of the German Oriental Society in Beirut (founded by Roemer). In 1992 he became professor at the University of Kiel and in 1998 professor for Islamic studies at the Free University of Berlin . He was visiting professor in Cairo, Los Angeles, Princeton, Philadelphia and at McGill University .
He also dealt with the preoccupation of Islamic authors with ancient Egypt (sphinx, pyramids). His important work is “History of the Arab World”, which he wrote in 1987 together with Albrecht Noth , Tilman Nagel , Heinz Halm and others. a. wrote and edited.
He was a member of the Academia Europaea and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences . Haarmann was editor of the Bibliotheca Islamica , the sources on the history of Islamic Egypt, of Islamic History and Civilization and co-editor of the International Journal of Middle East Studies.
