Sea battle on the Kolberger Heide
The sea battle on the Kolberger Heide took place on July 1st, 1644. During the Swedish-Danish War 1643–1645 , a Swedish and a Danish fleet fought on the Kolberger Heide for supremacy in the western Baltic region. The sand of the Kolberger Heide, formerly located on the Schoenberger Probstei coast, had been washed away since the storm surge on February 10, 1625 and had settled in front of Laboe ; the name was retained for the coastal area.
The two fleets with 40 and 34 ships met each other north of Fehmarn and then moved into the Kiel Fjord in the course of the battle . The Danish Imperial Admiral Jørgen Vind and King Christian IV were seriously wounded in the battle. Christian IV lost an eye, but kept fighting. Vind died from his injuries on July 17th in Copenhagen . The commanding admiral of Sweden Clas Larsson Fleming was also fatally hit by a Danish battery on his ship the Scepter.
The Danes were able to hold their own and prevent a Swedish landing. The event was later processed in the Danish royal anthem Kong Kristian stod ved højen mast .
