Clas Larsson Fleming (born March 1592 in Villnäs ; † July 26, 1644 in the Bay of Kiel ) was a Swedish admiral .

Life

Origin and family

Clas came from the Swedish noble family of the Lords of Fleming. He was a son of the Swedish governor of Åbo Lars Hermansson Fleming (1545-1602) and Anna Henriksdotter (nee Horn af Kanckas ).

The first marriage with Anna Göransdotter Snakenborg († 1637), which was concluded in 1618, resulted in three daughters and three sons. In 1651 they were raised to the status of Swedish baron as Fleming af Liebelitz . A second marriage, who remained childless, was concluded in 1638 with Elena, widowed Countess Brahe , née Freiin Bielke (1592-1652).

Career

Fleming studied in Wittenberg in 1609 and attended several other non-Swedish universities until his return to Sweden in autumn 1612. His career in the military , he began in 1613 as Kornet . He was also chamberlain in 1614 and a member of the Swedish commission for peace negotiations with Russia in 1615 . In 1618 he was still a cavalry captain , and in 1620 he was vice admiral . The move to the Navy must have been very beneficial to his tour. In 1625 he became a councilor and from 1629 to 1630 he was president of the finance chamber. He became Lagman in 1632 in Södermanland and in 1634 in Söderfinland . Also in 1634 he was promoted to 1st Admiralty Council at the Amirality College created by Reichsadmiral Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm and thus had actual command of the fleet together with Erik Eriksson Ryning until his death . Even in 1634 he became chief Stadholderless and Governor of Stockholm . As such, he developed a brisk construction activity. E.g. he had the Jakobskirche finished. From 1637 he was also president of the Stockholm School of Commerce . He died as commanding admiral on his ship the Scepter in the sea ​​battle off Fehmarn .

The mine cruiser Clas Fleming , which served in the Swedish Navy from 1914 to 1959, was named after him.
