Baron Erik Eriksson Ryning (born November 11, 1592 in Gimmersta , † December 6, 1654 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish admiral .

Life

Origin and family

Erik Ryning came from a the Swedish peerage belonging sex . His parents were Erik Nilsson Ryning († 1613) and Anna Månsdotter, née Lilliehöök (1559-1621). He was a nephew of the Swedish Imperial Admiral Axel Nilsson Ryning (1552-1620) and married in Nyköping in 1620 with Maria Elisabet Kursell (1599-1678), a niece of Klaus Kursell , but left no children.

Career

Ryning began his officer career in the Dutch service. Back in Sweden he was an ensign in the life guards in 1619 , was captain of the infantry regiment in Östergötland in 1621 , received his first command in the same year and was lieutenant colonel of the foot soldiers in Södermanland in 1622 . In the war against Poland he moved into Prussia in 1626 , subsequently became governor of Elbing and was one of the two deputy commissioners of Axel Oxenstierna in the peace negotiations in 1627 and 1628. In 1627 he was Colonel Södermanland's regiment. In 1629 he became the commander of all Prussian cities held by the Swedes and was meanwhile in service with the navy . Under Imperial Admiral Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm , he was in 1630, alongside Admiral Clas Larsson Fleming (1592-1644), as Vice Admiral in command of the fleet. Also in 1630 he was governor of the Stralsund garrison . He commanded the fleet when Gustav II Adolf was translated to the German theater of war . He took part in the conquest of Wismar at the beginning of 1632 and became town commander there . For a few months he was governor of Älvsborg fortress before he was again given command of the fleet after the king's death. 1633 became Ryning the Imperial Council and Lagman in Södermanland was also since 1634 Governor in Västergötland . In 1644 he was temporarily governor general in Swedish Livonia , but was recalled there after the death of his colleague Clas Fleming to take over the management of the large fleet. In the Torstensson War he took Visby in 1645 and blocked Copenhagen . In 1651 he became governor of Gotland and was recognized as a baron.

He was buried on May 25, 1655 in St. James' Church in Stockholm.
