The first Christian building on the same site was a chapel in the 14th century. This was replaced in the 1430s by a brick church (some sources mention a building made of wood and natural stone).
The Diet in Västerås of 1527 decided to demolish this church and in 1580 the construction of today's church began on behalf of King John III. The architect Willem Boy and the builder Henrik van Huwen took over the construction management. After several construction delays, the church could not be inaugurated until the first Advent 1642 in the presence of the current Queen Christina .
The history of the organs goes back to 1644. Today's main organ was built in 1976 by the Danish organ builder Marcussen & Son (Abenraa) in the existing historical organ case, with pipe material from previous instruments being reused. The instrument has 83 stops on five manual works and a pedal, including a remote control. The game actions are mechanical, the stop actions are electric.
