Set Karl Viktor Svanholm , (born September 2, 1904 in Västerås , † October 4, 1964 in Nacka near Stockholm ) was a Swedish opera singer ( tenor ) and opera director.

Life

Set Svanholm initially worked as an organist and elementary school teacher before he had his voice trained. After completing his vocal training with John Forsell in 1925, he worked from 1929 to 1949 as a cantor in the Stockholm Church of St. James , from 1930 to 1940 as a teacher at the Conservatory of Music and from 1933 to 1943 as the conductor of the church choir of the Stockholm diocese.

Set Svanholm made his debut in 1930 as Silvio in Ruggiero Leoncavallos Bajazzo as baritone at the Stockholm Royal Opera . Six years later he made his tenor debut, also at the Royal Stockholm Opera, as Radames in Giuseppe Verdi's Aida .

From 1938 Set Svanholm sang on all major opera stages in Europe. In 1938 he also appeared in two productions at the Salzburg Festival . From 1945 onwards he was a member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York for eleven years . In 1956 he returned to Sweden and became director of the Royal Opera in Stockholm. He held this position until 1962.

Set Svanholm celebrated his greatest successes as a hero tenor in operas by Richard Wagner ( The Ring of the Nibelung ) and Giuseppe Verdi , but also by Georges Bizet .
