Johann Gebhard (born July 1, 1676 in Velthurns / South Tyrol , † February 13, 1756 in Regensburg ) was a painter of the Bavarian Baroque and Rococo .

biography

Together with his teacher, Franz Metz , Johann Gebhard came from Austria to the monastery under Regensburg . In Regensburg, Johann Gebhard came into contact with the Asam brothers . Under her direction he painted the frescoes in the side aisles of the church of the prince abbey of Sankt Emmeram around 1733 .

Johann Gebhard's sons were the painter Otto Gebhard and the barrel painter Andreas Gebhard. With some works it is controversial whether they can be ascribed to Johann Gebhard or his son Otto (or both together). This is especially true for the frescoes and oil paintings with the signature "JO Gebhard" . The tombs of the members of the Gebhard family of painters have been preserved in the Dech Betten cemetery (today a district of Regensburg).
