The parish church of St. Jakob is a Catholic parish church in the town of Cham in the Upper Palatinate .

Exterior

The church on the market square is of Romanesque origin. Its foundations in massive quarry stone masonry and the substructures of the towers belong to the 13th century. The northern tower was not expanded, but connected to the town hall. The retracted choir was built between 1394 and 1411. The Gothic struts, which are separated twice, have been preserved. The nave originally had six bays . In 1894/95 it was extended to the west by two yokes.

The three doors were built around 1700. On the south side of the choir, a life-size painting by the local painter Georg Achtelstetter depicts the church patron James the Elder .

Interior

Interior of the parish church

The interior was decorated with frescoes and stucco in 1750 by the church painter Johann Gebhard and his son Otto Gebhard . The ceiling painting in the choir shows the martyrdom of the apostle James, surrounded by the portrait medallions of the four evangelists. The two artists signed the nave painting in 1750. It depicts the battle of Clavijo on May 23, 844, in which St. James is said to have appeared in a dream to the later victorious King Ramiro I of Asturias and is said to have promised him his assistance in the following fight. In their work, father and son Gebhard based themselves on the ceiling painting of the same theme in the church of Ensdorf Abbey, created by their teacher Cosmas Damian Asam as early as 1714 . In the center of the fresco, James appears as a rider to the fighting army. The ceiling painting above the gallery was only made in 1900 by Waldemar Kolmsperger sen. painted. It shows the rescue from a shipwreck with the help of St. James.

The Rococo style furnishings were largely removed around 1850. Only the Aloisius altar with rich shell work (around 1760, once the tabernacle of the high altar), the figure of St. James above the former side entrance, a Jesus tied to the scourge column in a wall niche and the found chair cheeks date from this time. The neo-Romanesque furnishings were created by the Munich sculptor Johann Petz from 1848–1852 . After the last expansion in 1894/95, it was replaced by the current furnishings in the neo- baroque style . Purveyor to the court A. Schoyerer initially made the two side altars according to the designs of Professor Leonhard Romeis . The statues of the holy Regensburg bishops Wolfgang and Emmeram on the Josephi altar (left) as well as the blessed Alruna and St. Theresa von Avila at the Sacred Heart Altar (right) was created by Thomas Buscher from Munich. The Sebastian and Mary altars with paintings by Waldemar Kolmsperger the Younger were created shortly before the outbreak of World War I in 1914. The figures of Saints Karl Borromeo , Odo von Cluny , Georg and Florian were created by Thomas Buscher around 1910. The figures from 1896 on the high wall of the nave with the Saints Franz Xavier , Antonius of Padua , Anna and Monika , the mother of St. Augustine .

Schoyerer as well as the Cham sculptor Ludwig Egen and the Chamber painter and gilder Thomas Brunner and his son Karl. The relief in the middle represents the transfiguration of the Lord . Roider (signed), you can see Jesus' sermon on the mount at the pulpit rise (Mt 5f), then the 12-year-old Jesus in the temple, teaching the scribes (Lk 2,41-52) and Finally, Jesus' sermon to his disciples at the Sea of Galilee (Jn 21: 1-14). The Barbara altar at the side entrance on the right is dedicated as a war memorial site.

The very high -quality depiction of the Mater Dolorosa under the cross on the south pillar of the wall house opposite the pulpit dates from the 18th century and came from the little Kalvarienbergkirche to the parish church during the restoration in 1961/62.

Bells

In both world wars the bells of the parish church were confiscated. The largest of today's five bells is St. Jakob with 2.6 tons, the fallen bell weighs 1.5 tons and the Joseph bell weighs 600 kilograms. These new bells were solemnly consecrated on May 4, 1946 by Auxiliary Bishop Höcht. The Maria Hilf bell, known as the women's bell with 24 hundredweight, dates from 1796 and was cast by Josef Spanagl, Straubing. After a long odyssey she returned to the tower of the parish church. The smallest bell is the old death bell weighing four hundredweight. The tones of the bells are b 0 , des 1 , es 1 , gb 1 and a flat 1 .

  2. In fact, in the literature, including in the latest church guide from 2016, see Bibliography p. 20, repeatedly the reference that this is the representation of St. Otto . The text that can be read on the open book that the saint is holding speaks against it: "Statuta cluniacencia". This refers to the statutes of the Cluniac. The second abbot of the Cluny monastery was Odo, who gave the monastery and its community the first statutes, called consuetudines. S. u. a .: http://www.rdklabor.de/wiki/Cluniazenser . This confusion is probably due to the fact that "Odo" is a variant of the German name Otto .
