The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Andreas is a hall church in the Pürkwang district of Wildenberg in the Lower Bavarian district of Kelheim . It belongs to the parish of St. Andreas Pürkwang in the diocese of Regensburg .

History and architecture

The church was built around 1462 by the knight Hans Ebran von Wildenberg , who chose the hill opposite his Wildenberg Castle as the location of the church. In 1487 at least the choir was completed and the choir altar was donated. A thorough renovation of the interior took place in 1723 and then according to a plan by the master builder and plasterer Joseph Bader the Elder, carried out by his son Martin. The south portal was walled up and the west entrance with a vestibule was created instead.

Exterior

The church is a stately, late Gothic brick building in the shape of the Landshut school. The choir is slightly drawn in and closed on three sides. It is surrounded by buttresses, the second floor of which is designed with angular templates. A roof frieze and a simple sill strip, which also continues around the nave, structure the building. The windows were changed to round arches during the Baroque era and set lower. The stately tower to the north of the choir was once closed with a pointed helmet . A high octagonal structure rises above three storeys with a uniform pointed arch panel structure , which is crossed over by corner struts. The crenellated wreath and the hood date from the Art Nouveau period .

Interior

Inside, the vaults' net ribs were knocked off during the radical Baroque style. The wall pillars, which are weak in the choir and stronger in the nave, were encased in pilasters with stucco capitals and high entablature pieces. The latter were particularly richly developed in the choir and provided with baluster-like swellings. The retracted choir arch was changed into a round arch. The rich stucco decorations condense in the choir. Frame fields were attached to the vaults, which were ornamentally integrated into tendrils with shell motifs, putti heads , flowers and other things. The central field in the ship is filled with a stuccoed wreath of clouds and rays with putti; the eastern field as well as the main field were painted in 1888. On the curved parapets of the double west gallery are dense symmetrical bandwork decorations, which were probably created around 1735.

Furnishing

The high altar from 1724 is an artistically valuable work by the carpenter Anton Schnidtmann from Neustadt, who is often commissioned in the region. The carved figures were delivered by Anton Neu from Landshut. The paintings of Johann Gebhard from Prüfening created and show the crucifixion of St. Andrew and the worship of the holy Eucharist at the altar extract . The stately altarpiece was only set in 1752 by Ignaz Kauffmann from Teisbach and is decorated with gilded acanthus , ribbon and flower ornaments. Above the twisted, light blue outer columns there are gable parts on which moving angel figures sit. The structure of the main floor is repeated in the extract. On the side there are figures of Saints Erasmus and Valentin .

The front side altars date from around 1730 and are made of stucco marble with paintings by Johann Gebhard. The Holy Family is depicted on the left altar and Saint Sebastian on the right . Two more altars are set up in the nave to the west of it. The cross altar from 1790 in plait style is decorated with figures by Johann Gallus Weber from Abenberg . The Donatus altar from 1794 shows belated rococo forms with carvings by Franz Xaver Ziegler from Kelheim .

The pulpit is an original, rustic stucco work from around 1730 with a strongly ornamented staircase and basket. The sound cover is designed as a volute canopy and is crowned by a cloud column with the figures of two evangelists and putti between the volute bows. Several carved figures should also be mentioned. In the nave there is a Maria with the child from around 1480. In two niches on the choir arch there are figures of Saint Barbara from around 1620 and of John from the middle of the 16th century. St. Andrew on the cross from around 1680 can be found in the choir and a Vespers picture from the 16th century in the nave . St. John Nepomuk from the middle of the 18th century is also depicted in the nave . The Stations of the Cross are made up of a large-format cycle of paintings by Franz Kauffmann from 1765.
