Peter Heinrich Meinke (born November 24, 1939 in Berlin-Lichterfelde ; † July 1, 2017 in Munich ) was a German mechanical engineer and university professor.

Live and act

Peter Heinrich Meinke was born on November 24, 1939, as one of three children in Berlin-Lichterfelde. His father, Hans Heinrich Meinke , was employed as a high-frequency technician at AEG and from 1946 professor at the Institute for High-Frequency Technology at the TH Munich . From 1958, Peter Meinke studied mechanical engineering there and was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation during this time . In 1970 he was awarded the title of Dr.-Ing. In research on a single-barrel mechanical model oscillator for the clarification of subharmonic oscillation phenomena of parameter-excited electrical circuits with non-linear capacitance diodes from the TH Munich . PhD. The reporters were Professors Hans Stefaniak and Kurt Magnus (1912–2003).

After completing his doctorate, Peter Meinke began his industrial work in the New Technology division of MAN in Karlsfeld near Munich . There he set up a department for calculating the vibrational dynamics of ultra gas centrifuges. Such gas centrifuges are a "highlight of rotor dynamics, experimentally and theoretically". Around 1972 Meinke turned to traffic engineering. First of all, it was about the design of the emergency components for magnetic levitation vehicles , which were tested in a field test using an emergency component measurement carrier developed at MAN. Then came the entry into the technical running design of rail vehicles to support MAN rail transport construction plant in Nuremberg .

Meinke initiated a large number of development projects as part of the BMFT funding program researching the limits of the wheel / rail system. In a first project, active force-controlled components were developed to improve the running stability of chassis. The associated tests on the rolling test bench of DB AG in Freimann were successfully completed with a world record speed of 530 km / h. In cooperation with the TU Berlin , Meinke started the project Simplified Nonlinear Dynamics of Rail Vehicles . In this project, the running dynamics of four-axle rail vehicles was simulated on the analog computer. The digital simulation program MEDYNA was developed by the subcontractor DLR in the subsequent research project on procedures and design programs for the precalculation of optimal designs for rail vehicles , in which four industrial partners and the TU Berlin are involved . MEDYNA has developed into a computing tool for designing rail vehicles that has been used worldwide for many years.

Another highlight was the development, led by Meinke, of the air-sprung coupling frame bogies for the InterCityExperimental (ICE / V) test vehicle of the DB AG. The technical design was carried out at MAN Neue Technologie, the design and construction at MAN GHH Eisenbahnverkehrstechnik in Nuremberg. On May 1, 1988, the chassis proved itself in the world record run of the ICE / V with a speed of 406.9 km / h. The takeover into the series of the ICE 1 failed because of the higher costs for the air suspension of the drives. It was not until the ICE 2 series that the DB AG relied on the superior concept of air suspension, which also meant that the rubber-sprung wheel tires retrofitted in the ICE 1 could be dispensed with. The research project track dynamics at high speeds and evaluation system (in cooperation with DB AG) was about the modeling of the track superstructure to simulate the vehicle / track interaction and the evaluation of the track position quality based on the dynamic vehicle reactions to position deviations and track alignment

In addition to activities in railway technology, Meinke dealt with a wide range of other topics in various specialist areas, including dynamics of web offset printing machines , wind turbines , system electronics and control technology , on-board computers , operating data acquisition and status monitoring of vehicles and structures, elevator control, high-energy physics , passenger information systems for the ICE . Electronic controls for the upper and lower machinery of theater stages, wear of rollers, software development for simulating the driving dynamics of commercial vehicles, satellite communication and a health monitoring system for civil use of navigation satellites.

As a result of major restructuring in MAN Technologie, Meinke - most recently head of the system electronics division - left the company at the end of June 1992. He went into business for himself and founded the Ingenieurgesellschaft für Angewandte Technologie mbH (IAT), which is responsible for engineering in the fields of satellite communication and vehicle dynamics business. Furthermore, Meinke founded the company C + K Computer und Kommunikation GmbH for the sale of hardware components and software products for satellite navigation, satellite communication and satellite-based tracking of vehicles for localization and track measurement.

System dynamics was one of the focal points of Meinke's work, both during his work at MAN Technologie and during his freelance work. It is therefore understandable that Peter Meinke worked in this area both at the University of Stuttgart (Applied Mechanics I and II, Introduction to Mechatronics; October 1, 1991 - September 30, 2008) and at the TU Berlin (System Dynamics in Industrial Application) in the Teaching participated, whereby the activities in Stuttgart with Professor Werner Schiehlen were more pronounced. On October 1st, 2008 Meinke was appointed honorary professor at the University of Stuttgart. His lectures were valued by students and assistants because they demonstrated the successful application of theoretical methods of dynamics in industrial practice.

The VDI awarded him honorary membership for his services to technical and scientific collaborative work.

Peter Meinke was torn from life on July 1st, 2017 in the midst of his work in preparation for a lecture for the EUROMECH Colloquium Rolling Contact Mechanics for Multibody System Dynamics. His contributions to research and development in the field of rail technology were outstanding.
