Fritz Gils , actually Jakob Friedrich Gils , (born December 22, 1901 in Darmstadt , † July 1, 1957 in Groß-Umstadt ) was a German drawing teacher, artist and painter .

Short biography

From 1921 to 1925 he studied at the Mainz School of Applied Arts, graduating with the state drawing teacher examination. From 1926 to 1930 he continued his education at the State Art Academy in Kassel with Kay H. Nebel and Ewald Dülberg, among others . Gils had been based in Darmstadt-Eberstadt since 1930 . 1930–1940 he was a drawing teacher at what was then the secondary school in Groß-Umstadt. From 1941 to 1945 he was a soldier in Russia and was taken prisoner of war . After 1946 he taught again as a drawing teacher in Groß-Umstadt.

Act

In addition to his work in the school service, his paintings and drawings were created under the sign of the New Objectivity , especially during the Weimar Republic . In contrast to many Darmstadt artists who orientated themselves on French art, Fritz Gils was impressed by the cool and surreal-colored paintings of the Italians, especially that of Mario Sironi , who worked in the artist group Novecento in the style of Futurism .

Fritz Gils was a member of the Darmstadt Group and the New Darmstadt Secession (member from 1951 to 1957). Both are artists' associations that work far beyond Darmstadt.

His real "discovery" only began in the 1990s. For the first time, his works were exhibited on a larger scale. Today, large-format works (especially from the time before the Second World War ) are traded at auctions for several thousand euros.
