Phil Bosmans

Phil Bosmans SMM (born July 1, 1922 in Gruitrode , Province of Limburg ; † January 17, 2012 in Mortsel , Province of Antwerp ) was a Belgian , Catholic religious , author of spiritual writings and telephone counselor .

Life

Born in Flanders, Bosmans spent most of his youth in Genk , in the Belgian province of Limburg . In 1941 he joined Rotselaar the Congregation of Montfortains at. He stayed there until the end of World War II and moved to Oirschot in the Netherlands in 1945 . He was ordained a priest there in March 1948 .

From 1957 Bosmans lived in the small Montfortan monastery near Antwerp . In 1959 he founded the "Bond zonder naam" (Association without a Name). He encouraged many social initiatives in this community beyond national borders. He founded the “Werkhuis MIN - Menschen in Not” work place, the first social workshop in Belgium for former prisoners and men without unemployment benefits. In 1969 the “MIN repair service” was set up, a free service for old, sick and handicapped people. 1973 opened the "Hotel MIN", an accommodation facility for former prisoners. In 1990 “De Stobbe” (The Rootstock) was inaugurated in Antwerp, the former monastery building was converted into a reception center for women with several children. Through his work, Bosmans also earned the nickname “the modern Francis ”. In 1991 he resigned from the chairmanship of the Bund ohne Namen. He was succeeded by Frans Van Oudenhove . In 1988 the German Confederation without a name was founded and has its seat in Freiburg im Breisgau. The managing director is Ulrich Schütz , who has translated all of Phil Bosmans' works and text collections in German. A “union without a name” inspired by Bosmans is also at work in the Netherlands and Croatia, among others.

In 1972 his book “Menslief, ik hou van je” was published . It became his best-selling book in Flanders with 800,000 copies . In Germany it was published under the title “Do not forget the joy” and has been bought two million times since it appeared in 1976. Bosmans also published works in Esperanto . In Germany, Phil Bosmans became known through numerous book publications and collections of sayings on calendars, posters and stickers.

In December 1993, Bosmans had a car accident, presumably caused by a minor stroke. In February 1994 a severe stroke followed, which resulted in several months of hospitalization. Since then, his right limbs have been paralyzed.

In 2009 he was appointed officer of the Belgian Order of the Crown . He was also awarded the Visser Neerlandiaprijs (1968 and 1991) and the Flemish Community Prize (1991) for his services.
