The new treasure trove in Lugau was the only shaft of the Zwickau-Lugau coal mining association founded in 1855 . Like the God's Blessing Shaft , it was on the ridge between Lugau and Oelsnitz .

history

With the drilling of the well was started in 1856, after 1844 in Lugau coal had been discovered. In 1862 the pit got a siding.

Accident of 1867

On July 1, 1867, a shaft broke in which all 101 miners on the morning shift lost their lives. The cause was the washing out of the mountains behind the shaft lining . When the latter was no longer able to bear the weight of the broken masses, the setting broke. The rock masses fell into the shaft, making it airtight. Rescue measures initiated immediately were unsuccessful as the masses kept breaking. The director of the Zwickau – Lugau coal mining association suffered a nervous breakdown, whereupon the work was directed by the director of the neighboring God's blessing shaft .

The news of the accident quickly spread to the surrounding communities, and the miners' relatives rushed to the shaft in large numbers. But despite all demands and efforts, the shaft could not be held and was abandoned on July 11th. To prevent further break-up, the shaft began to be toppled with heaps. This work was completed in September.

The miners in the pit suffocated.

Consequences of the accident

The accident led to a worldwide solidarity campaign for the widows and orphans.

Accidents like this led to calls for greater responsibility on the part of mine operators.

The Saxon Mining Authority took this mining disaster as an opportunity to enforce the previously made requirement that every mine must have at least two independent exits.

The Zwickau – Lugauer hard coal mining association went bankrupt.
