Vejlerne is a large wetland between Lønnerup Fjord in the west, Lund Fjord in the north, Bygholm Vejle in the east and the Limfjord in the south, on the North Jutian island of Vendsyssel-Thy in Denmark .
history
After the loss of high-yield agricultural land in southern Jutland after the war with Prussia , the Danish state tried to promote the reclamation of previously unused land.
In this context, an attempt was made to drain a branch of the Limfjord that was below sea level . This plan was only abandoned in 1916, after which the area was left to natural development again. In 1960 a 6,000 hectare area was finally placed under nature protection.
nature
The area is made up of shallow lakes, wide reed areas and adjacent swamps. The reeds are the largest of their kind in Denmark.
Because of the breeding and resting bird species here, it is considered a wetland of international importance . The rare bird species found here include the bittern , gray goose , black tern , sea eagle and peregrine falcon , cranes and spoonbills can be observed. Otters also live here .
tourism
The area itself cannot be entered. However, there are specially set up observation huts on the edges of the protected area and on a dam. On the main road between Thisted and Fjerritslev there is a nature center with an informative exhibition about the area.
