The 3rd stage of the Tour de France 2019 took place on July 8, 2019. The 215-kilometer hilly stage led from Binche to Épernay . The stage start began at 12:10 p.m. in Binche, the sharp start took place at 12:19 p.m. near Vellereille-les-Brayeux .

Race course

The stage was characterized by the attempt to break away by a group of five, which formed shortly after the start and was able to develop a lead of up to 6:30 minutes. The Belgian Tim Wellens attacked about 49 kilometers before the finish or 5.5 kilometers before the first mountain classification and won all four mountain classifications of the stage. Wellens secured the lead in the mountain classification and was awarded the red number . In the last mountain classification - 16 kilometers from the finish - he was caught by the peloton. Julian Alaphilippe attacked and led the stage alone to the finish, his pursuers could no longer catch up with him. Alaphilippe took over the yellow jersey . Mike Teunissen , who had previously worn the yellow and green jerseys , crossed the finish line in 80th place, 4:54 minutes behind.
