Løjt Sogn ( German: Loit ) is a parish municipality ( Danish : Sogn ) on the peninsula of the same name in Northern Schleswig in southern Denmark , which is located northeast of the city of Aabenraa (German: Apenrade ) and was formerly part of the Harde Rise Herred . Until 1970 she belonged to the Åbenrå-Sønderborg office and then to the Aabenraa municipality in the former Sønderjyllands office , which was merged into the "new" Aabenraa municipality in the Syddanmark region as part of the municipal reform on January 1, 2007 .

Municipal area

Løjt Church

Løjt or Løjt Land forms a peninsula between the Apenrader Förde in the south, the Little Belt in the east and the narrow Gennerbucht in the north. To the northeast is the small island of Barsø , which also belongs to the municipality of Løjt. While the west of the municipality consists of relatively flat and partly boggy geest land , the larger eastern part consists of a partly strongly rugged moraine landscape with up to an average of 40 to 55 m high hills, between which smaller watercourses have formed partly deep ravines, especially in the north of the peninsula . Such a watercourse can be found, for example, at Rundemølle, which is now the museum of the local history association. The deep cut of Genner Hoel also forms the northern border of Løjt. The highest point in the municipality is the Trendberg near Løjt Skovby with 92 m.

The area of the municipality of Løjt covers about 55.7 km². At the last count before incorporation (1960), 2600 citizens lived in the municipality; on January 1, 2020 there were 3451. The main settlement is the parish of Løjt Kirkeby with 2262 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020), most of which with numerous new single-family houses who has taken in new residents. Otherwise very small villages, scattered settlements and individual farms determine the appearance of the settlement. The second largest village in the municipality of Barsmark, located in the far east, is an elongated, loosely built-up street village. Løjt Kirkeby is the largest settlement within the old municipality after Aabenraa. The rest of the Loitland is dominated by agriculture, there are several tourist facilities on the coasts, namely on the beaches of Loddenhøj, Sandskær and Skarrev.

history

With its fertile clay soils, Løjt Land has always been a prosperous farming country. At times, however, shipping also played a not insignificant role. Administratively, the area belonged for centuries to the Rise Herred (German: Riesharde) of the Aabenraa office . But the Schleswig Bishop and the Schleswig Cathedral Chapter also had individual possessions here, while the nobility, unlike in the other eastern parts of the old Duchy of Schleswig, was only weakly and briefly represented.

With the Aabenraa office, Løjt Land belonged to the partial duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf from 1544 to 1713 . In 1867 the entire Duchy of Schleswig became Prussian after the German-Danish War , but the Aabenraa district remained as the Aabenraa district with almost unchanged borders . After the Harden was dissolved, the Loit district was formed in 1889 from the rural communities of Bodum, Stollig, Kirkeby, Norby, Schauby, Hökeberg, Barsmark and Barsoe.

In the referendum in Schleswig in 1920, 353 German votes were opposed to 1,119 Danish votes. As part of the 1st voting zone, the area as Løjt Land has now become part of the Kingdom of Denmark again . The Aabenraa office survived this constitutional innovation hardly changed as the Aabenraa office . In 1970 the North Schleswig offices were merged to form Sønderjyllands Amt . At the same time Løjt became part of the municipality of Aabenraa . In 2007 this municipality was combined with several neighboring municipalities to form a unit with 60,000 inhabitants, which is also called Aabenraa municipality .

traffic

The main traffic artery is the trunk road 170, which was part of the most important north-south connection in Denmark until the completion of the motorway ( E 45 ). It runs in the west of the municipality in a north-south direction through Bodum and connects the neighboring cities of Aabenraa and Haderslev . Since Løjt Land forms a peninsula, the other roads are only of local importance.

A ferry connects the small island of Barsø (15 permanent residents in 2020) with the mainland. Barsø Landing ferry terminal is located between Sandskær and Loddenhøj in the northeast of the peninsula.

From 1901 to 1926 the route Aabenraa - Løgumkloster of the Apenrader Kreisbahn crossed Løjt Land. However, the connection was very slow as the train took long detours to serve all locations. In the parish of Løjt alone there were six breakpoints, namely Knapp, Stollig, Løjt-Skovby, Barsmark, Loit Kirkeby and Løjt-Norby. As early as 1926, the railway was the first connection in Denmark to be abandoned without replacement. While the western part of the narrow-gauge railway was converted into a state railway on a fairly straight stretch between the two end stations, Løjt Land lost its railway connection forever, and the focus was increasingly on expanding road traffic.

economy

The fertile Løjt peninsula has traditionally been a wealthy farming country. Agriculture has lost its importance here, as everywhere, but it is still an important economic factor. Tourism has increased in importance, both through beach holidays on the beaches of the Little Belt and Åbenrå Fjord (a focus is on Loddenhøj in the north-east) and through farm holidays. The abundance of rural monuments and scenic beauty also attracts numerous day visitors from other areas. Løjt Kirkeby is a shopping destination for the entire peninsula, unless the residents turn to Aabenraa.

Education and culture

Most of the cultural and educational institutions responsible for Løjt are now in Aabenraa. In Løjt Kirkeby, however, there is a village community school for the entire municipality, to which a library is attached. However, the existence of the library is endangered by the structural reform that has been in effect since 2007. There is a German kindergarten in Lojt-Skovby. The children later go to school in Aabenraa. Avbæk in the south of the municipality is the location of a secondary school.

Attractions

The Romanesque Nikolaikirche is one of the most beautiful in the entire Schleswig region. It consists of a nave and choir as well as cross arms, sacristy, vestibule and an impressive Gothic tower, which is similar to the Törninglehn type predominant in the north-west of the old duchy . The most famous piece of equipment is the late Gothic winged altar, which in size even exceeds the altars of the neighboring town churches.

Løjt Land is richly equipped with impressive farms, not a few of which show the four-wing shape, which is unusual in the rest of Schleswig. Many have been restored in recent years. There are also some impressive thatched roof buildings in Løjt Kirkeby .

The second largest and most easterly village of Barsmark has an almost completely preserved historical townscape consisting of impressive four-sided courtyards, but also smaller cottages and installs, which are only faced by a few more recent buildings. In September, the avenue of old whitebeam trees that stretches along the main street of the elongated and relatively loosely built village is impressive .

The old watermill Knapp is located near Stollig. The restaurant was restored in the old style a few years ago and is now one of the most famous restaurants in the region. Not far from here was a station on the Apenrader Kreisbahn. Nearby, the road to Stollig and Løjt Kirkeby ( Stennevej ) is spanned by an exemplary preserved viaduct, one of the most beautiful monuments of the old small railway.

In the old water mill Rundemølle in the north of the landscape there is a small local museum. Above the gorge there is a parking lot, from which one has the most beautiful view in the whole of the country.

The hill country has an extraordinary wealth of natural beauty. These include the sometimes quite steep hills, several stream gorges, downright ravines, forests and beaches. The railway line has also been partially preserved as a particularly beautiful bike and hiking trail ( Knappstien ). After all, the island of Barsø is a special natural experience.

There are several beaches along the Baltic Sea coast, of which those at Loddenhøj and Skarrev are the best known.

Myrpold is a three-meter-long burial box that consists of ten bearing stones and two cap stones. The megalithic complex is located near Skarrev.
