Barsø ( German : Barsö) is a Danish island that lies in Lillebælt near the south Jutland mainland in front of the Genner Bugt . It belongs to the parish municipality ( Danish : Sogn ) Løjt Sogn in the Aabenraa municipality and is located about 12 km northeast of the city of Aabenraa ( German : Aabenraa). The island has an area of 2.66 km² and has 15 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) who are mainly active in agriculture. There is a fixed ferry connection with Barsø Landing on the mainland, which is mainly used by day trippers in summer.

Until 1864 the island was part of the Duchy of Schleswig ( Åbenrå Amt , Rise Herred ), with which it fell to Prussia that year . From 1867 to 1920 Barsø was, despite its small population, in 1905 it had 61 inhabitants, an independent rural community in the Aabenraa district . From 1920 the island belonged again to the Rise Herred in the Åbenrå office and became part of the Aabenraa municipality in the Sønderjyllands office with the municipal reform in 1970, which became part of the “new” Aabenraa municipality in the Syddanmark region with the 2007 municipal reform .

Barsøcentret is on the island , an information and natural history center that also serves as a school camp .
