Petras Vaitiekūnas (born March 26, 1953 in Liudvinavas near Marijampolė ) is a Lithuanian diplomat ( ambassador ) and former politician , Foreign Minister of Lithuania.

Life

In 1976 Petras Vaitiekūnas graduated from the University of Vilnius with a degree in physics . From 1976 to 1990 he was a research assistant at the Physical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Lithuania in Vilnius, where he received his doctorate in 1983. As a member of the Supreme Council (1990–1992), he was one of the signatories of the declaration of state independence of March 11, 1990 .

From 1992 he worked in various positions in the diplomatic environment. Including as adviser to the President of Parliament, as adviser to the President. From 1999 to 2004 he was the Lithuanian ambassador to Latvia and from 2005 to 2006 ambassador to Belarus . From July 12, 2006 to December 9, 2008 he was Foreign Minister of Lithuania.
