Ivo Vajgl (born March 3, 1943 in Marburg an der Drau ) is a Slovenian journalist , diplomat and politician .

Life

After graduating from the Biotechnical Faculty of the University of Ljubljana , Vajgl worked as a journalist and as press spokesman for the Yugoslav Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1976 to 1980 he worked as a correspondent for the Yugoslav press in Bonn .

In 1984 he became Consul General of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in Cleveland USA . Other diplomatic functions followed. From 1998 to 2002 he was Slovenia's ambassador to Austria as well as to the OSCE and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In 2004 Vajgl was Slovenia's Foreign Minister . At that time he belonged to the Liberal Democracy of Slovenia , but joined the newly founded party Zares in 2007 . Subsequently, he was foreign policy advisor to President Janez Drnovšek from 2004 to 2007 and a member of the State Assembly from 2008 to 2009 .
He has been a member of the European Parliament since 2009 .

He is married and has three children.
