Kristina Brenk , née Vrhovec, also known as Kristina Brenkova (born October 22, 1911 in Horjul , Austria-Hungary , † November 20, 2009 in Ljubljana , Slovenia ) was a Slovenian writer , poet and translator . She was best known for her children's books .

Life

Brenk was born in 1911 in Horjul in what was then Austria-Hungary. She studied psychology and education at the University of Ljubljana and received her doctorate in 1939.

During the Second World War she was a member of the political resistance organization of Slovenia, the Osvobodilna Fronta . From 1949 until her retirement in 1973 she worked as an editor at Mladinska Knjiga publishing house.

In 1972 Brenk received the Levstik Prize for her work Deklica Delfina in Lisica Zvitorepka . In 1999 she received the Levstik Prize a second time for her lifetime achievement in writing children's books. She died in Ljubljana in 2009 and was buried in the Žale Central Cemetery there.

The award for the best Slovenian picture book, which has been presented by the Slovenian Publishers' Association since 2003, was named after Kristina Brenk from 2011.
