European Consortium for Political Research

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) is a scientific association in Colchester that is dedicated to research and international cooperation in political science .

Aim and purpose

It was founded in 1970 on the initiative of Jean Blondel , professor of comparative politics at the University of Essex from seven European universities. The main objective is to support and further develop political science, in particular by stimulating cooperation, improving training opportunities and establishing professional contacts.

The ECPR quickly developed into the leading network in the political science discipline, albeit with a focus on the areas of "comparative politics" and individual policy areas. It currently has around 325 political and social science faculties and research institutes in over 40 European countries as members. There are also around 30 associated members from the USA, Canada, Israel and Japan.

particularities

The ECPR has the following special features:

  • Memberships are only possible from institutes or universities, not individuals.
  • Graduation of the membership fee according to country, whereby the highest contribution of currently 1,900 euros per year has to be paid by Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland; Greece, Portugal, Spain, Turkey and Cyprus pay a reduced regular rate of 1,600 euros, while the Central and Eastern European countries pay contributions of 150 euros and 450 euros, respectively, and all OECD-associated countries 1,000 euros.
  • Almost a unique form of the annual congress: a group of scientists meets for five days and discusses the contribution of each individual member in detail. The congress consists of around 25 to 30 such working groups, which only exchange ideas during breaks, free time and two or three joint events.
  • In addition, the ECPR organizes Graduate Conferences, Joint Sessions and every summer a six-week summer school on methods in the social sciences at the University of Essex in Colchester (80 km northeast of London ) and a two-week French-language course in Lille .
