Paul Fredericq (born August 12, 1850 in Ghent ; † March 23, 1920 ibid) was a Belgian historian.

Paul Fredericq

Fredericq converted to Protestantism in his youth, attended the Royal Athenaeum in Ghent and studied at the University of Liège with the teaching degree in 1871. Afterwards he was a teacher in Mechelen and Arlon . In 1875 he received his doctorate in history in Liège (Essai sur le rôle politique et social des ducs de Bourgogne dans les Pays-Bas) and became a professor there. In 1883 he succeeded Jacob Heremans as professor in Ghent. During the German occupation in World War I , he was against collaboration and was therefore deported to Germany in 1916 with his colleague Henri Pirenne , where he was in Gütersloh , Jena and Bürgel . In 1919 he became rector of the University of Ghent, which he soon gave up because of anti-Flemish campaigns.

Fredericq was active as a liberal in the Flemish movement. From 1891 to 1895 he was on the city council for the Liberals. He was president of the Willemsfonds in Ghent and editor of Het Volksbelang . In addition, in 1894 he founded the Hooger Onderwijs voor het Volk folk high school movement . Fredericq campaigned for the teaching of Flemish in Belgian schools.

Fredericq dealt in particular with the religious history of Belgium in the 16th century (for example the Inquisition) and the history of Flemish literature. He also wrote a history of the Flemish Movement.

He was a member of the Royal Belgian Academy of Sciences and the Royal Belgian Historical Commission.
