Studied at UCM

Type of study

The college teaches on the principles of Problem Based Learning (PBL). The students determine their own learning goals, which they work out using literature and discussions in small groups of a maximum of twelve students. The tutorials take place twice a week per course. In these meetings the tutor only has the role of an advisor and not that of the teacher. Lectures are held once a week in each course. In modules of seven weeks each, students at UCM take two main courses and one so-called skills course.

Academic focus

Courses in three different subjects are offered at UCM, these are:

  • Humanities (German: humanities)
  • Social Sciences
  • Life Sciences

During the course of their studies, students commit to one concentration. However, there is also the possibility of making the course interdisciplinary. The student decides on two of the directions mentioned above. Thus, the students create their own curriculum. The humanities concentration includes the following academic areas: philosophy, literature, art, history, cultural studies, European studies and media studies. The scientific concentration includes biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics and sustainable development. The social science concentration includes sociology, psychology, business administration, economics, international relations, international law, political science and public administration.

Academic core courses

The core courses ( core courses ) are courses of general education to serve the students. The aim of the core courses is to impart basic knowledge in the fields of philosophy, history and science. The courses are called:

  • Contemporary World History (contemporary world history from 1945)
  • Modeling Nature (Scientific Models)
  • Philosophy of Science (Theory / Philosophy of Science)
  • Political Philosophy

In addition to the four core courses, students must also take four courses outside of their concentration. For example, if someone studies philosophy (and therefore has the concentration in the humanities), the person must also take courses in the other two concentrations.

Academic advisor

The task of the Academic Advisor is to support the student in choosing his courses and thus in putting together his individual curriculum. Meetings between student and counselor take place at least twice a year.

degrees

The study at UCM can be completed with a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science . These are graduated with the honors, cum laude and summa cum laude awards .
