Franz Palm (economist)
Franz Christian Palm (born May 15, 1948 in Ostbelgien ) is a Belgian economist .
Live and act
Palm studied economics at the Université catholique de Louvain , at that time still in Leuven , and graduated with a master's degree in economics and econometrics . From 1971 to 1972 he was employed as a research assistant, initially at the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics (CORE), an interdisciplinary research institute at the Université catholique de Louvain, and then until 1974 with Arnold Zellner at the Graduate School of Business from the University of Chicago . After returning to Europe , Palm received his PhD from the same university with his dissertation: " Time Series Analysis and Simultaneous Equation Systems with Macroeconomic Applications ".
In 1980, Palm was taken on as professor of econometrics at the Free University of Amsterdam before he was appointed to the same position at Maastricht University in 1985 , where he became one of the founding members of the business faculty. There he was elected Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration from 1986 to 1989 as well as from 1998 to 2001 and from 2004 to 2006 . In addition, Palm was visiting professor at the Universities of Louvain-la-Neuve and the Graduate School of Business in Chicago, and in 1990 he was a visiting researcher at Harvard University and the University of Montreal .
Palms research is in the field of econometrics of time sequences and panel data, and his contributions to time sequence analysis, for example, are critical to understanding and predicting economic developments. Among other things, this led to the fact that he was hired as a consultant by large companies such as Koninklijke DSM NV or the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.
Franz Palm is a member of the American Statistical Association , the European Economic Association and in "CESifo", a cooperation between the Center for Economic Studies (CES) and the Ifo Institute for Economic Research . In addition, Palm has been a member of the University Council of the Aachen University of Applied Sciences since 2013 as well as long-standing managing director and president of the board of directors of the Ostbelgiens VoG business development agency.
Palm is co-editor of the Journal of Econometrics and the "Journal of Empirical Finance", which he founded in 1993 with four other colleagues. He was also a long-time editor-in-chief of the Dutch trade journal "De Economist" and was co-editor of the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics and the European Economic Review .
Honors
- In 2000, Palm was accepted as a foreign member in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences and in 2005 was appointed Academy Professor of Econometrics.
- In 2009 the Swiss Université de Friborg awarded him an honorary doctorate .
- In June 2015 Franz Palm was made a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion .
- In January 2017, the lecture hall at the Maastricht School of Business and Economics was renamed the "Franz Palm Lecture Hall".
